AANKOM BRIDGE B402 ON N1 - KROONSTAD TO KOPPIES
This 60 m long simple span trestle bridge is believed to be the largest of its type in South Africa. The main span is 38 m long using a circular voided deck construction. The design was chosen for simplicity of construction in that the abutments were rectangular columns and only two pile caps were needed. No bearings were required and earthworks construction was independent of bulk earthworks on a large toll road project. The design also obviated the need for a central pier, incieasing safety and removing the need for increased width for contraflow traffic when an additional carriageway was constructed under the bridge. The simplicity of the overall structure led to the completion of the deck in 18 weeks, a further five weeks was required for post-tensioning and balustrade work. The design provides a very clean and uncluttered appearance; there are no vertical members and the span to depth ratio is large.
