RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE USE OF GEOTEXTILES IN DRAINAGE AND FILTRATION SYSTEMS

RECOMMENDATIONS POUR L'EMPLOI DES GEOTEXTILES DANS LES SYSTEMES DE DRAINAGE ET DE FILTRATION

The report examines the factors affecting the choice of geotextiles used as filter or drain in drainage and filtration systems, in hydraulic structures, trafficked structures, engineering structures, foundations of buildings, storage areas, and leisure areas. The use of a geotextile as a filter, where its flow is perpendicular to the plane of the geotextile, is discussed. The geotextile can also be used as both filter and drain so that water is transported within its thickness. Here the problem of clogging becomes very important. The grading of the soil from where the flow comes, the plasticity of the soil, its dispersivity, its state of compaction and its permittivity are all factors that affect its choice of geotextile. Special aspects of design and laying are discussed and various types of systems with geotextile filter and drainage material are described. Factors affecting the design of drainage systems with filter-drain, composite geotextile and systems with homogeneous filter drain are discussed. Examples are given to show how its selection of geotextiles is based on the application of Darcy's law. The laying of additional material to prevent local damage is discussed. Classification scales showing the main properties of geotextiles are given in an annex.
