STUDY OF THE MECHANISM OF MODIFICATION OF CONCRETE, MORTAR, HYDRAULIC GROUT PROPERTIES THROUGH THE ADDITION OF THERMOSETTING RESINS

ETUDE DU MECANISME DE MODIFICATION DES PROPRIETES DES BETONS, MORTIERS ET COULIS HYDRAULIQUES PAR ADDITION DE RESINES THERMODURCISSABLES

This study shows that the addition of a relatively low percentage of epoxy resin-type resins results in a maximum improvement of the properties of concrete; mortar and grout, providing that the synthetic material is first fixed by a pulverized support material smaller than 80 microns, and that the setting agent is judiciously selected. The study showed that the hydraulic binder is subject to normal hydration and that the epoxy resin plays an important role. This role is due partly to the action of the resin and the setting agent when they are in a liquid state, and partly to the action of the epoxy resin once it is hardened. In a liquid state, the epoxy resin on its own or associated with the setting agent acts as a water repellent and plasticizer. The setting agent on its own has a direct influence on shrinkage and cracking. Shrinkage decreases when the proportion of setting agent increases. This reduction in shrinkage is independent of the loss of weight, and it seems that the presence of the setting agent leads to a differentiation between conventional shrinkage, hydraulic shrinkage and another type of shrinkage linked with cement hydration. It was also found that microcracking of the hydrated paste takes place on a smaller scale in the presence of an organic agent. In the hardened state, epoxy resin has an important influence on the improvement in mechanical strength and resistance to frost, permeability, etc. For the same conditions of compaction, concrete, mortar and grout to which epoxy resin has been added have greater strength than that of control materials. /TRRL/
