NOT IN MY BACKYARD: A CASE STUDY OF LOCAL AREA TRAFFIC ISSUES IN COLYTON

Colyton is a quiet residential area in St marys, lying between the great western highway and the western freeway. After a freeway ramp was constructed to an adjacent subarterial road, there was an increase in traffic filtering through the residential area. This resulted in complaints from residents and a convoluted process of consultation involving various resident groups, local retailers, a bus company, aldermen, council officers and the department of main roads, until a traffic management scheme was finally adopted. Even then, further objections from residents resulted in modifications to the proposed scheme when implementation was imminent. This paper outlines the process from initial complaints to the issuing of works instructions, and draws some conclusions for future residential traffic management schemes (a).
