The main object of the paper is to present a comparison between the deformation properties of a kaolin as determined from various triaxial test procedures. The deformation properties studied are the undrained Young's modulus eu, drained Young's modulus e1, drained Poisson's ratio V1 and three-dimensional coefficient of consolidation C3. The triaxial test procedures employed are:- (a) a 'one-stage' dead loading test in which drainage commences from the instant of loading. (b) a 'two-stage' dead loading test in which a period of undrained strain is permitted before drainage commences. (C) an undrained test carried out at a constant rate of movement. (D) a drained test carried out at a constant rate of movement. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages and these are discussed in relation to the determination of deformation parameters for practical foundation problems. It is found that the drained parameters e1 and V1 from methods (a), (b) and (D) are in reasonable agreement and that the undrained modulus eu from methods (B) and (C) are also in fair agreement. The effects of the duration of initial consolidation and the duration of undrained strain in a two-stage dead loading test are investigated and finally, data are presented on the dependence of the deformation parameters on the initial stress state and the level of shear stress in the sample, and also on the stress system imposed on the sample during initial consolidation prior to testing.
