PAVEMENT MATERIALS: STATISTICAL ASSESSMENT OF QUALITY

This technical report is an addendum to the previously published four part series on pavement materials (see IRRD nos 272074, 272078 and 272079) and replaces the intended part 5 quality description and assurance. Because of the variability of road building materials, the specification and assessment of their quality is most appropriately based on a statistical analysis of the values of the physical properties. This report introduces the basic principles of quality assessment and discusses the significance of variability and sampling risks to the specification and assessment of quality. The development of a statistical quality control plan is shown to demonstrate the application of these principles (a).
