CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION IN THE ARABIAN GULF
This paper describes the special precautions required in the design, construction, repairs and maintenance of concrete structures in the Arabian gulf, due to difficult climatic and geological conditions. Precast concrete is used widely in the Arabian gulf, for both structural and non-structural components, and it is found convenient for several reasons; many facilities are available for its use. Despite this, some peculiar difficulties have been encountered in concrete construction there; structures built a decade ago have shown various signs of deterioration, requiring repairs and extensive maintenance. Lists are given of the precautions needed during the design, production and construction of concrete structures. Where concrete has already deteriorated, it is necessary to take remedial action to prolong its useful life and to remove structural deficiencies. The steps to be taken before starting remedial work are specified. The alternative remedies, applied according to circumstances, are: (1) strengthening the existing structure; (2) repairing the existing structure; (3) demolition and reconstruction. The further investigation of the following areas is recommended: (1) behaviour of concrete in hot weather conditions; (2) shrinkage and creep in concrete exposed to various combinations of heat and humidity; (3) development of admixtures and their long-term effect on durability; (4) evolution of economical methods of repairing existing structures; and (5) development of architectural and structural designs suitable for the Arabian gulf.
