SETTLEMENT PARAMETERS OF DUBLIN BLACK BOULDER CLAY

This paper compares the results of on site and laboratory consolidation tests of the stoney Dublin black boulder clay, which is difficult to sample; it develops a relationship for estimating settlement beneath foundations. Estimates of this type will be needed for major structures when eurocode ec7 is introduced in 1992. The study was carried out at a site in tallaght on the South West boundary of Dublin. The following conclusions were reached: (1) Dublin black boulder clay is difficult to sample and test because of its high stone content, and it is especially difficult to determine the appropriate settlement parameters for the design of foundations; (2) a comparison of on site and laboratory tests indicates that, for this clay, the relatively easy to measure immediate settlement is approximately half the final settlement; (3) settlements estimated, using the unloading curve of standard oedemeter test on recompacted samples with particles larger than 5 mm removed, agree moderately well with those measured on the test footing; and (4) the use of the initial load consolidation curve grossly overestimates the settlement.
