There are still several factors the influence of which on the properties of steel fibre reinforced concrete are unknown. The behaviour of steel fibres in cement, mortar and concrete matrices is discussed in this paper. It is shown that the mix proportions of the matrix, the sand content and the size of aggregates all have a significant influence on the strength and deformation properties of the composite. The effects of admixtures and of fibre geometry are discussed. It is shown that the significant contribution of the fibre reinforcement is t transform a brittle material into a ductile composite. The dynamic properties of the composite are thus enhanced. The tensile strength improvement is modest but the superior crack arrest properties of the fibre will enable a substantial propertion of this to be utilised in design. (a).
