NEW RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TUNNEL LIGHTING

This paper aims to assess the main differences between three existing recommendations on the lighting of road tunnels, all of which are currently being revised, and to assist designers of tunnel lighting schemes to choose between them and adopt the most appropriate performance criteria. The existing recommendations are: (1) standard BS 5489 part 7 (see IRRD 803293, 803472, 809236, 208188, 200617, 803473); (2) CIE publication no 26; (3) the 1987 PIARC document on tunnel lighting. Some research by the CIE (commission internationale de l'eclairage) is outlined; new CIE recommendations on luminance have been formulated for the threshold, transition and interior zones of a tunnel. Revision of BS 5489 is being considered for the threshold, transition, interior and exit zones, and the lighting of short tunnels. The new recommendations of PIARC (permanent international association of road congresses) cover: (1) entrance lighting; (2) veiling luminance; (3) interior zone lighting; (4) emergency lighting; (5) electricity supply; (6) distribution systems. Wk adrian's alternative approach to tunnel lighting is discussed, and some recent developments in lighting are reviewed. The CIE, BSI and PIARC design methods are compared and the following conclusions are reached: (1) CIE gives a relatively simple guide for worldwide use and acts as a basis for national codes; (2) the BSI draft recommendations form such a code, adapted to British experience and requirements; (3) PIARC takes the most detailed account of various contributions to veiling luminance in the driver's field of view.
