STRENGTHENING AND STABILIZATION OF SOILS BY A NON POLLUTIVE PROCESS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF ECOLOGICAL ROADS AND CAR PARKS
CONSOLIDAMENTO E STABILIZZAZIONE DEI TERRENI CON UN PROCEDIMENTO NON INQUINANTE PER COSTRUZIONE DI STRADE E PARCHEGGI ECOLOGICI
Highly unstable soils such as silty sand, silt, silty clay, organic or muddy terrain, have been successfully stabilized by the use of a chemical product called glorit/a, developed in Japan and used there for over ten years. This article reports on the use of the product in Italy over the last two years in applications such as roads, car parks and cycle tracks, rural roads in mountain and forest areas, and finally a first motorway application on a section of the milan-sesto calende motorway. In all these cases the use of glorit/a added to the cement produced a cost saving of from 20 to 50% with regard to usual operational methods, since it enabled the use of large quantities of in situ materials previously considered unsuitable. The stabilization properties of the product have their origin in an ionization process. Results show improved permeability, bearing capacity and frost resistance characteristics in treated soils, and the product is nontoxic and simple to use. (TRRL)
