CORRELATIONS BETWEEN PEDESTRIAN FLOWS AND LAND USE VARIABLES

CORRELAZIONI TRA FLUSSI PEDONALI E VARIABILI DI "LAND USE"

Increasing interest in the problems of urban pedestrian movement has led to studies which have established a valid theory of flows and levels of service for the adequate planning of pedestrian movement. Using available data from 52 towns of various sizes, this article presents a regression analysis which establishes a relationship between typical land use variables and pedestrian flows. The variables examined are: overall area (in m2) designated for sales and services within the pedestrian area; overall area, equipped and usable, reserved for pedestrians; the resident population of the town plus the relative population ingress, expressed in total number of inhabitants. Ratios are determined which enable reliable forecasts of pedestrian flows in relation to land use variables. (TRRL)
