SUGGESTED METHOD FOR LARGE SCALE SAMPLING AND TRIAXIAL TESTING OF JOINTED ROCK

The commission on testing methods of the international society for rock mechanics has issued a suggested method which describes the sampling of representative specimens of a pervasively jointed rock mass and triaxial tests in the laboratory. The sampling technique by means of a large single-core barrel simplifies the formerly used procedure of hole-by-hole drilling. Thus, smooth surfaces are possible and allow good loading conditions. The described testing procedure allows separation of the reversible and irreversible deformation properties of the jointed rock mass, including the volumetric deformation behaviour. Loads and displacements are measured directly at the specimen and the stresses and strains can be calculated, including the influence of radial deformation. The use of a multi-stage technique enlarges the amount of information to be gained from one sample. Experience shows that a jointed rock mass is well-suited for multi-stage tests because it behaves in a more ductile fashion than intact rock. (Author/TRR)
