THE STRESS CONDITION IN ROAD PAVEMENTS OF STABILIZED GRANULAR MIXTURES

LO STATO TENSIONALE NELLE SOVRASTRUTTURE STRADALI IN MISTO STABILIZZATO

A construction of stabilized granular mixtures protected by a surface treatment can constitute a valid solution for secondary roads carrying modest industrial loads. This illustrated article describes laboratory tests, the results of which have provided an improved knowledge of the behaviour under load of such mixtures, and are used as a basis for an analysis of the internal stresses of a superstructure consisting of a simple layer of stabilized granular material. The tests were carried out by means of a specially designed road testing machine which transmitted the loads through twin rubber tyred industrial vehicle wheels, operating in a circular basin. Details are given of the materials and the compaction procedures used. (TRRL)
