SS 586 OF THE AVETO VALLEY. STATIC RESTORATION OF A ROAD STRUCTURE

SS 586 DELLA VALLE DELL'AVETO. RESTAURO STATICO DI UN MANUFATTO STRADALE

This paper describes the restoration and upgrading of an old and deteriorated masonry bridge, as an alternative to demolition and replacement by a new structure. The bridge, on state road ss 586 across the redomolini river, is a three-span structure consisting of two masonry piers and three roman arches faced with concrete. Serious defects included subsidence, collapse of side wall masonry, and of the carriageway across half its width. Repair operations described and illustrated consisted essentially of: (a) installation of a temporary Bailey bridge; (b) consolidation of a damaged pier by means of a reinforced concrete cladding supported on a reinforced concrete plinth, resting on a foundation of micropiles of 220 mm dia; and (c) repair of sidewalls by means of two reinforced concrete blocks tied by steel anchorages. The cost of the operation was favourable when compared with that of a new bridge, even of a similar type to the existing structure. (TRRL)
