IDENTIFICATION OF MODAL PROPERTIES OF BRIDGES
In an attempt to document the changes in modal properties as a result of structural deterioration, the results are presented of an evaluation of steady-state modal test data. This involves evaluations of the multi-degree-of-freedom data from the single-span laboratory model and the 3-span bridge tests. The details of the study are described and discussed. It is noted that the changes in selected mode shapes are the best indicators of where structural deterioration is occurring. The mode shapes that have a large displacement in the vicinity of the deterioration are the most useful indicators. It is also possible to determine the mode shapes from ambient vibration data. Vibration testing as a means of locating structural deterioration will continue to develop as a viable inspection technique.
