THE KILPISJARVI PROJECT: CASE STUDY OF COLD-REGIONS RESEARCH IN FINLAND
The paper describes the Kilpisjarvi project which is to provide a testing ground to compare different state-of-the-art materials and techniques in cold-regions design under actual field conditions in one of the more severe localities in northern Finland. Two projects being pursued incorporate both building design and road design. The road research includes experiments in various configurations of insulated embankments, insulated toe slaopes, and icing-mitigation schemes. Two embankments have been designed to limit frost-heaving damage. Experiments are still in progress and long term rsults from the road studies are not yet available.
