BAR CODING IN CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING
The development is described of a test-bed integrated software system to control information flow on the project jobsite. To accomplish this task with the speed and accuracy desired, an automated identification technology (bar coding) is used in the initial data collection and in support of the ongoing process of information updating. Specifically, the study expolored the feasibility of implementing an expanded means of tracking construction materials and equipment using bar codes; developed and demonstrated an integrated construction labelling, information storage, and retrieval data base, as well as a comprehensive construction application program environment. The study also determined the potentials and limitations of bar-coding technology in computer-integrated construction.
