LIMIT-STATES DESIGN OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PIPE I: CRITERIA

This is the first of a 2-part paper which presents a new design procedure for prestressesd concrete pipe. The procedure is based on limiting the combined effects on the pipe wall of axial thrust and bending moment resulting from internal pressure, external loads, and pipe and water weights, so that certain limit-states design criteria are not exceeded when the pipe is subjected to working loads and pressures and to working plus transient loads and pressures. This first paper presents the proposed limit-states design criteria, the experimental justification for each design criterion, and comparisons of the results of a number of carefully conducted combined-load tests with the calculated combined load limits corresponding to these design criteria.
