THE TRANSPORT NETWORK OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM

The transport network optimization problem is stated in general terms. Generally speaking in a transport network problem those values for the dimensions of the links (e.g. the numbers of lanes for the roads of a road network) and/or for the traffic on the links which optimize the objective function are investigated. Some possible and acceptable objective functions are discussed, such as the minimization of the total social costs for a given trip-matrix and the maximization of the total social net benefits. Finally, the fundamental constraints on the optimization are mentioned together with other possible constraints. This paper is a reprint of chapter 3 of: Steenbrink, P.A.
