JOINT FUNDING RELIEVES TRAFFIC IN COBB COUNTY, GA

In 1984, traffic congestion in Cobb County, located northwest of Atlanta, reached epidemic proportions. Local officials commissioned a roads/needs assessment study to find answers to the problem. Problem areas were identified and the solution was to widen to 4 lanes, about 150 miles of county roads immediately. New traffic signalization also was recommended. The plans, which would later improve another 150 miles of roads, would cost about $400 million. The Georgia Department of Transportation in cooperation with the local government agreed to joint funding of the venture. Called 'Partners in Progress,' it is one of the largest local road improvement programs in the country.
