BRIDGE PROTECTION: EARTHQUAKES AND OTHER THREATS
Following the devastating earthquke that hit California in October 1989, the California Department of Transportation moved quickly to repair and refurbish damaged facilities. The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge was soon repaired, and then the new bridge steel protected from corrosion by a high-performance water-borne primer, formulated with Haloflex 202 vinyl acrylic terpolymer emulsion from ICI Resins US, Wilmington, Massachusetts. In addition to meeting regulatory requirements and performance objectives, the primer is considered non-toxic and non-flammable, protecting painters who work with it as well as the bridges.
