ACHIEVING PROFITABILITY IN TERMINAL RAILWAY OPERATIONS: A CASE STUDY
The purpose of this case study was to determine the viability of a major terminal switching railroad which served a variety of shippers in an industrial community. The company exhibited symptoms of inefficiency and unprofitability associated with carload terminal district switching, such as inflated labor force relative to traffic volume and operating requirements. This particular company was selected for study because it was characterized by geographically diversified switching operations and distinctly different traffic patterns. These characteristics suggested that different operations or segments of track could be restructured or divested without affecting services to major shippers.
