ATSSA PRESIDENT REMINDS CONGRESS ABOUT SAFETY NEEDS FOR OLDER DRIVERS AND PERSONNEL IN WORK ZONES
In his testimony befoe Congress with regard to the reauthorization of the Federal-Aid Highway Program, the new president of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), Charles Dawson, stated that although elderly drivers comprise only 12 percent of the population, the present highway system needs to be altered to accommodate these drivers. He feels that signing letters should be larger and brighter using more reflective materials and that pavement striping widths should be increased from four to six inches. He would like to see a work zone safety program as part of the next Highway Act because there was an 8 percent increase in highway work zone fatalities.
