NURTURING A SHORT LINE DICK ROBEY'S WAY
Tips on how to make short lines flourish include: choosing an area where the people can see that the railroad works and is providing a valuable service to the community; being the only railroad in the area; building credibility with the Class I line-haul operation, developing a cooperative relationship with it and working closely with it on tariffs, contracts and freight car usage policies; paying attention to customers and their needs; and choosing a line that is in good condition so that major expenditures do not have to be put out early in the game. Public ownership of rights-of-way and political ties are also important keys to success.
