PATENTED MATERIAL-HANDLERS CONVERT SIDINGS INTO TERMINALS
Herzog Contracting Corporation, St. Joseph, Missouri, has made versatile tractor/loader/backhoes even more versatile by adapting them to climb and unload rail cars at any siding accessible by highway. Herzog now has more than a hundred of the modified rigs in use across the U.S. Most are JCB 1550B backhoes. The remainder are Case 580C or 680C models or John Deere 410s and 510s. All cartoppers are replaced after about four years of operation. Most have been modified to carry a backhoe bucket about 5 ft wide and 1.5 cu yd in size to unload bulk materials from either hopper or flat bottom gondola cars. During Herzog's 1988-89 fiscal year, their cartoppers unloaded 6.7 million tons of sand, aggregate and other bulk materials, including coal, contaminated materials, sewage sludge and mine tailings.
