Switching from stringline paving to the use of two laser-guided pavers enabled the contractor to cut 10 working days from a 110-day runway resurfacing project. Redesigning final asphalt grades for the laser-guided pavers also enabled 4000 tons of expensive P401 asphalt to be cut from the 35,400 tons originally specified for the project. The project was the resurfacing of the 7000-ft-long main runway at the Sarasota-Bradenton airport. This article gives further details on the construction operations and the laser-guided pavers.
