CROSS DRAINS UNDER JOINTS PREVENT PAVEMENT PUMPING
A patented process for installing transverse drains under the joints of existing concrete pavements is being tested in Wisconsin. The drains effectively remove free water in dense graded bases under the pavement joints, thereby reducing or eliminating the pumping of fines and faulting of joints under heavy traffic. The drainage system can also be installed under new pavements. Drainage Technologies Inc., Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, the patent holder, has installed more than 7000 ft of the "transverse interflow channels" (TICs) on I-43 north of Milwaukee. The work, done in a three-week period last fall, is described in this article. An insert with this article describes the installation of the TICs under new pavement.
