ADVANCING ASPHALT TECHNOLOGY
The Strategic Highway Research Program is focusing on control of 6 specific factors that affect pavement performance: aging; permannent deformation (rutting); low-temperature (thermal) cracking; fatigue cracking; moisture sensitivity; and adhesion. The two principal products of the 5-year research program will be performance-based specifications for asphalt binder; and performance-based specifications for asphalt-aggregate mixtures. Each of these specifications is targeted toward control of the 6 important pavement performance factors. Performance-based specifications will allow pavement designers to select materials that attain improved levels of serviceability in each of these performance areas under specific traffic loading and environmental conditions.
