THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRAFFIC SAFETY AND PUBLIC LIGHTING ON JUNCTIONS OF RURAL ONE-LANE HIGHWAYS: ANALYSES OF AN EXTENSIVE DATA BASE
DE RELATIE TUSSEN DE VERKEERSVEILIGHEID EN OPENBARE VERLICHTING OP KRUISINGEN VAN RURALE ENKELBAANSWEGEN: ANALYSES VAN EEN UITGEBREID GEGEVENSBESTAND
This report describes a pilot study which was undertaken to analyse the effects of public lighting on traffic safety. The work attempts to find a connection between the quantity of public lighting on both the main road, and on side roads, and traffic safety at junctions which are controlled by priority-rules on one lane unlighted highways outside built-up areas. Data from an extensive data base containing 200 such junctions were studied. Data from accidents, layout of junctions, characteristics of lighting, log linear analyses of accidents at night in which bicycles were also involved, were all analysed. It was shown that public lighting on the main road has a significant influence on traffic safety at night. The most positive effect for traffic safety is to lighten the conflict area and its immediate environment.
