RESEARCH INTO FACTORS INFLUENCING CAR MOBILITY IN THE NETHERLANDS. ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN LAND TRANSPORT. PROCEEDINGS OF A SEMINAR ORGANISED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES, DIRECTORATE GENERAL FOR ENERGY, LUXEMBOURG, MAY 16-18, 1988

This paper presents the results of a study into factors influencing private car use and other related transport variables in the Netherlands. Data from the Netherlands travel survey concerning the period 1978-1982 were used as well as time series with respect to transport expenditure spanning a longer period. The data for the period 1978-1982 are especially relevant because during this period a curve deflection in the behaviour of car drivers was observed. The results of the analysis indicate that, among other things: (a) fuel prices made little influence on travel patterns; (b) the growing reduction in fuel consumption of the car population is mainly due to manufacturers introducing more fuel efficient vehicles; and (c) personal net income is the most important variable influencing car use (expressed in vehicle kilometres).
