UTILITY OF WHEELCHAIRS ON PUBLIC ROADS
BRUIKBAARHEID VAN ROLSTOELEN OP DE OPENBARE WEG
Within the framework of measure 32-4 of the national plan for traffic safety 1983, a study was made into the ease of use of wheelchairs on public roads. The main aspects affecting this were: (1) traffic safety; (2) comfort; (3) reliability; (4) accessibility of buildings; and (5) the mobility of the user. The main purpose of the study was to make proposals for improvements to wheelchairs based on the practical considerations and requirements of the user. A literature review was made in order to make an inventory of previous studies and developments. Recommendations were presented for any new provisions. The legislation regarding the use of the wheelchair on public roads was discussed and an analysis made of the tasks of the wheelchair user in traffic. (TRRL)
