CAR-POOLING AS A POSSIBILITY
CARPOOLEN ALS MOGELIJKHEID
Car pooling has undisputed advantages when it comes to reducing traffic congestion, and social, environmental, and personal travel costs. However use of car pooling is not great and is not increasing. This report describes an analysis, using the broeg method, of questions on car pooling asked during a survey in Delft into the background to transport mode selection. The objective is to ascertain: (a) to what extent can car pooling be a real alternative to normal car use; and (b) whether the target group for car pooling is receptive to measures which would increase its use. It is concluded that there is a certain market for car pooling. A national car pool register would be one measure that could be used to increase usage; however a personal matching system might be more successful. Such a system should be introduced as part of a broader set of policy measures aimed at discouraging the driver to travel alone. Long term publicity drives can be successful in the long term. (TRRL)
