FOG AND POLICE SURVEILLANCE
MIST EN POLITIETOEZICHT
The main purpose of the study is to investigate the actions carried out by the police to prevent fog accidents on motorways. Facts about fog accidents, what is fog from the meteorological point of view, and limitations for practical actions by the police such as law enforcement, are all discussed. One of the main conclusions is that cooperation between all the relevant authorities is essential to obtain a safe traffic system. It is stressed that too many cars either drive too fast or do not have sufficient lighting when driving in fog. Up until now there have not been enough countermeasures against bad driving practice available for the police to enforce. Recommendations for improvement are presented. (TRRL)
