MOTORCYCLISTS AND THEIR HELMETS

MOTORRIJDERS EN HUN HELMEN. EEN ONDERZOEK NAAR DE WIJZE VAN BEVESTIGING VAN DE KINBAND EN NAAR DE CONDITIE VAN HELMEN VAN MOTORRIJDERS

A literature survey showed that a relatively high number of crash helmets came off during an accident. It was decided, therefore, to study this aspect in more detail. A specific literature survey into "coming off" rates and an inventory of the possible causes was made. The results of this survey showed that the coming off rates, reported in the literature, ranged from 7 to 36%. It also appeared that accident investigation projects could only detect part of the cause, for example, the mechanical failure of the helmet retention system. One of the other possible causes, improper use of the retention system, is quite impossible to detect with this method. Because there was no such study reported in the literature it was decided to investigate the use of the retention system in real traffic. It was only possible to carefully inspect this use while the motorized two-wheel rider had stopped. Some helmet condition aspects could then be observed as well. An investigation among moped riders has been done already. This report described the results of a survey concerning motorcycle riders and their passengers. The method used in this investigation was somewhat different from the moped study. Motorcyclists were interviewed when arriving at parking places. More than 1100 motorcycle riders were interviewed and their helmets examined. (Author/TRRL)
