COMPLEMENTARY COMPONENTS FOR THE BASIC DRIVER TRAINING. A TEST IN PRACTICE. PART I: PROCESS EVALUATION

AANVULLENDE COMPONENTEN VOOR DE BASISRIJOPLEIDING. EEN PRAKTIJK BEPROEVING. DEEL I: PROCESEVALUATIE

Accident statistics show that young drivers have a relatively high risk of having an accident in their first years after obtaining their driving licence. An activity programme was therefore set up to give special attention to the problems of this specific group of car drivers. During 1989 different initiatives were introduced to offer recently qualified young drivers a refresher course. The main purpose of such a course was to show young car drivers that the basic driver training is insufficient to enable them to participate in traffic safely, and that their driving skill and self knowledge can be improved. The final aim of the course was to introduce the young driver to low level risks in such a way as to prevent accidents. This report describes and evaluates the courses and the methods of instruction used. Research is also undertaken into the possibilities of improving certain aspects of driver training.
