This textbook describes the properties of road making materials necessary for long life and their use in the construction of highway pavements. Both bituminous or blacktop and concrete roads are covered. The book describes how pavements can be designed to withstand the heavier wheel loads of future traffic, and introduces the reader to present day highway construction methods and equipment. Maintenance is also covered, with special reference to pavement strengthening and the assessment for the need for such strengthening, and the measurement of skid resistance and the remedial measures that can be taken to increase this property. Drainage and the optimization and execution of earthworks are also covered. Included are current united Kingdom and United States specifications and standards.
