SELECTION OF TRANSPORT MODE: WHAT ARE THE MOTIVES OF THE HUMAN

VERVOERMIDDELENKEUZE: WAT BEWEEGT DE MENS

Current traffic problems in the Netherlands regarding present and future congestion, seem to make drastic measures to reduce traffic inevitable. Forecasts on car ownership and use show that the situation will worsen rather than diminish. A thorough knowledge of the determining factors of car ownership and use is essential if remedial measures to alleviate the problem are to be found. Mode choice has always been an important topic of traffic researchers. Usually most attention is devoted to the final result of mode choice, namely the modal split. In order to get a better idea of mobility in general and mode choice in particular, more needs to be known about how people decide to use a particular mode for a specific trip, and which elements play an important part in the process of making that decision. In the study reported here an attempt has been made to bring together information regarding mode choice from both the field of traffic research, and of decision analysis that provide a better understanding of mode choice, and will show which areas of research need to be explored further. In conclusion it appears that there are insights both from traffic research regarding mode choice and from decision analysis regarding the decision process, but little seems to have been done with regard to integrating these various ideas into specific knowledge on the decision process in mode choice. This area of research therefore needs to be developed further.
