TANDEM AXLE SANDING TRUCK/PUP TRAILER SANDER
This report describes the results of a project to construct an innovative tandem axle sanding truck with a pup trailer sander attachment. The test of the unit showed some benefits in terms of length of highway sanded versus time spent in reloading and turnaround travel, particularly when used on long stretches of divided highway. However, the pup trailer resulted in decreased maneuverability and was found unsuitable for concurrent shoulder plowing and sanding operations. For these reasons, general use of the pup trailer is not supported, and should be considered on an individual case basis. Tests of the new sanding equipment attachments were quite successful and this equipment has been incorporated into other truck-only sanders in the fleet. (a)
