URBAN SOUNDS FROM A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW. INTEGRATION OF THE SOUNDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN URBAN DESIGN
STADSGELUID ANDERS BEKEKEN. DE INTEGRATIE VAN OMGEVINGSGELUID IN HET BOUWKUNDIG ONTWERP
Environmental noises are not always annoying and distracting. On the contrary, many sounds are pleasant and/or provide vital information: for example they alarm US, enrich spatial and climatic experience, provide US a sense of time and season, permit social contact and so on. The urban designer should be able to make use of those positive aspects in the process of planning. Therefore concepts are needed to describe, evaluate and manipulate the sonic environment surrounding US. The sonic environment can be manipulated at the noise source, at the receiving end, or at areas in between the two. The most favourable effect can be reached by reducing background noise. The description, evaluation and manipulation of the sonic environment is illustrated in the case study of the urban plan "venserpolder" in Amsterdam. More research is necessary for more detailed recommendations for urban traffic, architectural and landscape design.
