TRAFFIC ENGINEERING

This textbook on traffic engineering contains 30 chapters, an extensive list of references, and an index. Chapters 1 and 2 provide a basic introduction and overview of the subject. Chapter 3 looks at the four primary elements of the traffic system--road users, vehicles, roadways, and controls. Chapter 4 focuses on traffic stream characteristics. Chapter 5 is an introduction to traffic studies and data collection. The focus of chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9 is on traffic volume studies, speed, travel-time, and delay studies, accident studies, and parking and pedestrians, respectively. Chapters 1 through 9 comprise Part I of the text. Part II concerns freeways and rural highways and contains the following chapters: 10 - Capacity analysis concepts; 11 - An introduction to freeway systems; 12 - Capacity analysis of basic freeway sections; 13 - Capacity analysis of freeway weaving sections; 14 - Capacity analysis of ramps and ramp junctions; 15 - Calibrating relationships for freeway analysis; 16 - Characteristics of rural highways; and 17 - Capacity analysis of rural highways. Part III covers urban streets and highways. It contains the following chapters: 18 - Introduction to traffic control; 19 - Capacity analysis of unsignalized intersections; 20 - Basic principles of intersection signalization; 21 - Analysis of signalized intersections; 22 - Calibration of parameters for critical movement analysis; 23 - Actuated signals and detection; 24 - Signal-control hardware and maintenance; 25 - Signal coordination; 26 - Arterial performance, operations, and management; and 27 - Computer traffic-signal control systems. Part IV, the final section, addresses the subject of congestion in the following three chapters: 28 - Management of congested facilities: freeways and surface streets; 29 - Techniques for addressing freeway system congestion; and 30 - Addressing surface street congestion.
