On July 19, 1989, United Flight 232 suffered a catastrophic failure of its aft engine, subsequently leading to the crash of the DC-10 aircraft as it attempted to land in Sioux City, Iowa. There were 112 fatalities. This hearing was held to examine the cause of the engine failure and to assess the potential for other similar failures in wide-body aircraft engines now in use. Also considered were what steps, including research, the Federal Aviation Administration, industry, and others may need to take in order to avoid such catastrophic failures in the future. Included are the testimony and prepared statements of expert witnesses.
