RAIL FREIGHT--TODAY
Although primarily looking at rail freight as it is in the North East of England in the late 1980s, various sectors are fully described on a nationwide basis. The sectors contain British Rail operations linked with the industries they serve, for instance the coal and oil industries. The operational use of TOPS (Total Operations Processing System computer) for the movement and utilisation of wagons is explained. Also current trends in freight handling throughout the country, including the possible influence of the Channel Tunnel are discussed.
