ACCIDENT-RESISTANT CONTAINER: MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES EVALUATION

The philosophy for the accident-resistant container (ARC) design concept and the evaluation of the candidate structures and materials are described. Structures evaluated were (1) inner and outer metallic shells, (2) energy-absorption end structures, and (3) closure joints. Materials evaluated were those believed capable of providing the fire-barrier protection, energy absorption, and payload nesting. Also evaluated were the thermal properties of the structure and of the candidate materials to be used for fire barrier and nesting of the payload.
