ALCOHOL PREVENTION CURRICULUM FOR EMS PROVIDERS

The purpose of this training program is to involve emergency medical services (EMS) professionals in prevention efforts in their states and local communities. First, it educates the EMS professional about the historical aspects of alcohol and alcohol addiction. Secondly, it serves as a tool which can be used to assist the EMS professional in delivering a message to other EMS professionals and to the general public emphasizing the risk involved with alcohol-impaired driving. This course has been developed with three target groups in in mind: (1) the peers of the EMS professional; (2) youth groups, especially high school juniors and seniors; and (3) the general public through clubs, civic and religious organizations, and others. The course is divided into three lessons or areas of importance. The first lesson, "Alcohol Consumption and Related Problems," focuses on the general effects of alcohol on society, community health, morbidity and mortality rates, and individuals. It discusses the effects of alcohol on the human body and also points out the effects on the whole body system, not just one system. The second lesson, "Alcohol and Driving," specifically deals with the effect alcohol has on individual driving performance and what impact that has on the general public. It discusses the legislative actions taken by national, as well as many state and local governments, to either prevent or deter citizens from driving while impaired. The third lesson, "Prevention/Intervention," helps to explain what role EMS can have in the field of prevention/intervention and alcohol-impaired driving. It discusses how each EMT can take an active role in networking and in the prevention and intervention of alcohol-impaired driving.
