PLANT FOR CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE. SINO-BRITISH HIGHWAYS AND URBAN TRAFFIC CONFERENCE. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE HELD IN BEIJING 17TH-22ND NOVEMBER 1986

This paper describes several types of equipment and techniques, used by aveling barford for road construction and maintenance. The grader is a huge machine, that can carry out the first stage of building a road, which involves stripping the top soil and flattening the terrain there as accurately as possible. It can be used for: (1) road construction; (2) road maintenance; (3) ditch cleaning; (4) bank sloping; (5) terrace construction; (6) spreading bituminous materials; (7) removing overburden; (7) clearing snow; (8) bulldozing (if an additional front blade is mounted); (9) scarifying. The motorgrader's function is to move rather than remove dirt; its most important part is its blade. There are two types of dumptrucks, on highway and off highway, both types can be used in road construction. The VXC 111 compactor system has four variants: (1) general purpose compactor; (2) asphalt/bituminous compactor; (3) earthworks compactor; (4) padfoot compactor. Extensive compaction performance tests have been carried out on the VXC on actual sites instead of laboratory-controlled conditions; these include many tests on the asphalt variant, fitted with smooth-tread tyres. The importance of training and servicing in the use of all this equipment is emphasized. (TRRL)
