QUEUE DETECTION USING COMPUTER IMAGE PROCESSING. SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ROAD TRAFFIC MONITORING
This article describes the development of an algorithm to enable the recognition by computers of traffic queues monitored by closed circuit television. Vehicle detection, and vehicle movement and spatial distribution analysis are all discussed. The article also describes an analysis of the effects of camera position upon traffic monitoring (for vehicle detection and speed measurement) in order to determine the range over which such a system could be expected to work, and to offer some guidance as to the best camera position. Initial experience using video tapes has shown that the algorithm is stable with respect to light levels and image noise. It provides a means of detecting obstructions in the carriageway at low flow levels. (TRRL)
