PROBLEMS RELATING TO LIGHT DEGRADATION AND SITE TESTING OF GEOTEXTILES - INTERIM RESULTS OF AN INTERNATIONAL WEATHERING PROGRAMME. DURABILITY OF GEOTEXTILES
This paper described the setting up of an international weathering programme to empirically assess the relative degradation of a wide range of commercially available geotextiles in substantially different environments, (the United Kingdom, North of the Arctic Circle, in the South China sea, and in the New Mexico desert). The variables examined included the following:-(1) differences in environment: (a) temperature ranges from -40c to +40c; (B) insulation ranging from none to desert conditions; (C) exposure above ground as against burying beneath ground as against immersion in the sea; (2) time -degradation periods varying from 1 to 10 years; (3) orientation of samples exposed to sunlight, varying through 360 degrees; (4) variations in size and shape of textile fibre; (specific surface area, diameter, tape cross section, strips up to 25 mm wide); (5) variations in type of textile polymer; and (polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polyamide, polyvinylidene). In each site, the geotextiles were woven around square posts of approximately 35 mm side dimension and placed half buried in the ground. Sixteen different products were selected on the basis of representing a full cross-section of different polymer materials and fabric construction types (geogrids, non-woven and woven fabrics, uebs and strips). Some initial results from the first two and a half years of weathering were described. These showed some rapid strength losses in certain geotextiles over this relatively short time scale. (TRRL)
