CIVIL ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS FOR LONG-TERM BEHAVIOUR OF GEOTEXTILES. DURABILITY OF GEOTEXTILES

This article discusses the properties of geotextiles relevant to their behaviour when used in civil engineering projects. Consideration is given to the 4 prime functions of geotextiles: separation, filtration, drainage and reinforcement. The prime properties of the geotextiles that are required to carry out each function are discussed, as is the effect that the soil-geotextile system may have upon the permanence of the geotextile. It is emphasized that no meaningful assessment of long term, or short term geotextile behaviour can be made unless full account is taken of the application for which it is used, and the environment into which it is placed.
