THE SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPAIRED PERFORMANCE. MEDICINES AND ROAD TRAFFIC SAFETY
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the issues involved in making the decision whether a certain drug or drugs can be used safely. Antihistamines and hypnotics will be considered in detail as they present examples of the two main problems which arise -whether individuals can work safely under the influence of a drug (antihistamines) and how long after ingestion of a drug which impairs performance it is safe to carry out skilled work (hypnotics). The aim of the paper is to provide the framework for discussion rather than specific recommendations of drug use, and to outline the various approaches which may be adopted to ensure that a drug can be used by those involved in skilled work.
